Earlier this afternoon, HOOPSWORLD’s Joel Brigham reported that the NBA Players have chosen to move in the direction of decertifying the NBA Players Association. In response, NBA Commissioner David Stern released the following statement: “At a bargaining session in February 2010, Jeffrey Kessler, counsel for the union, threatened that the players would abandon the collective bargaining process and start an antitrust lawsuit against our teams if they did not get a bargaining resolution that was acceptable to them. “In anticipation of this day, the NBA filed an unfair labor practice charge before the National Labor Relations Board asserting that, by virtue of its continued threats, the union was not bargaining in good faith.

The NBA landscape has been swimming in the language of rejection and ultimatums. A rare exception is Houston Rockets guard Kevin Martin, who made some waves by saying that he’s in favor of taking the best deal possible, while implying his primary concern was not missing games. “I think about [the ongoing CBA negotiations] probably more than I think about myself,” the guard said on the phone, from Ohio, where he grew up.

Yao Ming, who retired from the NBA four months ago, has started classes at Jiaotong University in his hometown of Shanghai, China, the Associated Press reported. Yao, 31, who made eight All-Star games while playing center for the Houston Rockets, is studying mathematics, English and modern Chinese history. “The teacher showed me some mercy and did not leave me any homework,” Yao joked after his first day of classes on Monday. Time magazine’s Global Spin blog reported that the university has had a special chair built to accommodate the 7-foot-6 Yao. According to Time, because of “constant media attention and frenzied fan interest,” some of Yao’s classes will be one-on-one tutorials. Speaking with the state-run Xinhua news agency, Yao expressed concern about how he’d balance being a student with his other responsibilities, including ownership of the Shanghai Sharks professional basketball team. “I think I need a better schedule as I cannot study full time as a normal college student,” he said. “I’ve got other things to do and I need to balance my time.” http://www.globalpost.com/dispatches/globalpost-blogs/weird-wide-web/yao-ming-college
