Rockets charge back late, beat Thunder 104-103

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) With both their starting guards sitting out and no momentum at all after the All-Star break, the Houston Rockets got just the kind of victory they needed to break out of their second-half slide.

Courtney Lee and rookie Chandler Parsons each scored 21 points, Patrick Patterson blocked Serge Ibaka‘s point-blank putback attempt in the final 2 seconds, and the Rockets charged back from an 11-point deficit in the last 3 minutes to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 104-103 on Tuesday night.

Houston had lost six of seven and coach Kevin McHale said beforehand that ”the bottom line is we haven’t played well since the All-Star break.”

Maybe this is the turning point they needed.

”If it’s not this one, I don’t know what will do it,” said Luis Scola, who chipped in 18 points. ”It’s very difficult to get a win that will pump you up more than this one because of all the circumstances.”

Scola listed off all the adverse conditions, one after another:

- Starting point guard Kyle Lowry is out two to four weeks with a bacterial infection and backcourt mate Kevin Martin sat out with a strained right shoulder.

- The rumors have been growing before Thursday’s trade deadline around a team that nearly was part of a blockbuster Chris Paul deal at the start of the season.

- Too many losses after the All-Star break.

- The Thunder’s position as the best team in the West and impressive 18-2 home record coming in.

Then there was the matter of a 102-91 deficit with 2:29 remaining.

”It’s very difficult to get an emotional win better than this one,” Scola said.

Ibaka had three dunks, one on a putback and two along the right baseline on feeds from James Harden, as the Thunder pulled away by holding Houston without a basket for 5 1/2 minutes. His final dunk, a two-handed slam on Durant’s missed reverse layup, provided the 11-point lead.

It wasn’t over yet, though.

Goran Dragic answered right back with a driving layup to start a string of eight straight Houston points, punctuated by Lee’s free throw brought on by a technical foul against Oklahoma City All-Star Russell Westbrook. Westbrook rushed back to confront Dragic after he was fouled with 48.5 seconds left, then hit only one of two free throws that followed Lee’s shots for the technical.

Lee then drove for a layup to get Houston within a basket before stealing the ball from Westbrook to set up his go-ahead 3-pointer from the left corner with 15 seconds left.

”It’s never over. I’ve been in the NBA four years and I’ve seen some crazy stuff happen,” Lee said. ”We were just all out there just telling ourselves we’ve got to keep fighting and keep competing. It’s not over until the time runs out.”

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 28 points but missed a turnaround jumper from the top of the key in the closing seconds after fumbling the ball and recovering. Ibaka grabbed the rebound but his follow try was swatted from behind by Patterson to get the Rockets leaping in celebration.

Oklahoma City also had a fourth Ibaka dunk wiped off the board during Houston’s 13-1 closing stretch when officials determined after an instant replay review that it came after the shot clock expired.

”We just weren’t able to close it out,” said Westbrook, who had two turnovers, a missed jumper and the technical foul in the final stretch.

”They stuck around the whole game and found a way to win.”

Asked about the confrontation with Dragic that drew the critical technical foul, Westbrook stood silently and offered no answer. After one more question, a team spokesman cut off Westbrook’s interview less than 2 minutes after it started and the All-Star headed out of the locker room without answering a follow-up question on the run-in.

”I think we had this one in our hands throughout the fourth,” Westbrook said earlier. ”We just let it go at the end.”

Westbrook finished with 19 points and Harden scored 16 for Oklahoma City, which has lost two of three at home after a 14-game winning streak at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The Thunder were limited to nine-fast break points, eight below their average.

”We’ve got to keep fighting no matter what. If we don’t execute on the one end, we’ve got to be better on the other end,” Durant said, rejecting the notion that Oklahoma City is getting bored in the dog days of the season.

”We’re an athletic team. We’ve got guys that can score, that can pass. It’s just a matter of us making the right play.”

Houston played without both of its usual starting guards for the first time all season. Martin missed just his third game and Lowry has been out five times, although three were against Oklahoma City.

Still, the Rockets took the lead with an early 14-3 run and then were able to keep the Thunder at bay most of the night, never leading by more than seven or trailing by more than four until the final 5 minutes.

Then, fill-ins Lee and Dragic came up with the big plays when it counted the most and Patterson closed it out.

”It means a lot for us only if it does what we think it will do,” Scola said. ”If we don’t carry over and this doesn’t give us confidence to get the next ones and build on it, it’s meaningless.”

Notes: Asked before the game if he considered Oklahoma City a championship-caliber team already or if a move was necessary by Thursday’s trade deadline, coach Scott Brooks said: ”I like our guys. I like the team we have. Still, we’re not where we need to be and we’re going to keep improving and we should. … I like our chances. I like our team. I’m excited about the opportunity.” … At 32-9, the Thunder had the best start in franchise history after 41 games – the usual midpoint of a full season. That’s one more win than the 1993-94 Seattle SuperSonics. … The Rockets finished a five-game road trip 2-3. Oklahoma City was 3-2 on its five-game homestand.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Report: Houston remains interested in Pau Gasol

The Houston Rockets may have failed to trade for Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol as part of the blocked three-team deal that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers, but they are still trying to acquire the big man, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The Rockets, Lakers and Hornets had a deal in place that would have sent Gasol to Houston, but the NBA blocked the trade from being completed in December. Nevertheless, according to Wojnarowski, the Rockets are still interested in trading for Gasol, who is averaging 16.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season.

DeRozan, Raptors smother Rockets

DeMar DeRozan scored 23 points as the Toronto Raptors used a rare offensive outburst to beat the Houston Rockets 116-98 on Wednesday night in Toronto.

Linas Kleiza added 19 points while Jose Calderon had 17 points and 12 assists for the Raptors, who wrapped up a 2-2 homestand with one of their strongest games of the season. Toronto set season highs in points and shooting percentage (59.2) while overcoming a shaky third quarter by dominating the weary Rockets over the final 12 minutes.

Leandro Barbosa added 15 points and Amir Johnson had 14 for the Raptors. Chandler Parsons scored 17 points to lead the Rockets, who have dropped five straight in Toronto, and five in a row overall.

Rockets look to snap losing streak against Raptors

The Houston Rockets haven’t struggled this much since the very beginning of 2012, but another date with the Toronto Raptors may be just what they need to get back on track.

Houston seeks to avoid a season-high fifth straight defeat Wednesday night when it visits sputtering Toronto.

The Rockets (21-18) are coming off consecutive overtime losses, falling 105-103 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday and 97-92 at Boston on Tuesday.

Those defeats are part of a four-game skid that matches their worst this season. They also dropped four straight Jan. 3-7.

Tuesday’s loss was also Houston’s fourth straight on the road, and it came despite having six players score in double figures, led by 18 points each from Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry.

“We started doing the worst thing you can do on the road: Just start playing the score as opposed to playing the game,” coach Kevin McHale said. “We lost our rhythm a little bit and then we just got too conservative trying to run the clock, trying to play perfect basketball.”

Goran Dragic hit a jumper in the final seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime, but Scola said it just delayed the inevitable.

“The fact that we played the overtime was a bonus, was a present. We lost the game before that,” Scola said.

Now the Rockets hope to end their skid against the last team they beat.

Houston shot only 38.7 percent but came away with an 88-85 win over Toronto on Feb. 28, as Lowry scored a game-high 26 points.

That contest marked the first of three times in the last five games the Raptors (12-26) have scored fewer than 90 points, and they’re averaging 89.3 for the season after falling 92-88 to Orlando on Monday.

DeMar DeRozan scored 23 points for Toronto, which has lost 10 of 14. Each of those defeats has come by seven points or fewer.

“It’s definitely frustrating, especially knowing how many games we had like that this season that we definitely could’ve won,” DeRozan said. “We just got to close out teams.”

Coach Dwane Casey lauded his team for another good performance despite falling short.

“I feel for our guys because they are putting themselves in a position to win,” Casey said.

The major reason for that is how well Toronto has played defensively of late. Beginning with the matchup against Houston, the Raptors have held their last five opponents to 88.2 points per game on 40.8 percent shooting.

DeRozan has done his part offensively as Andrea Bargnani remains sidelined with a strained calf, averaging 20.8 points and shooting 49.2 percent over his last eight games.

He had a career-high 37 points at Houston on Dec. 31, 2010, but the Rockets won 114-105 and will now seek to win three in a row in the series for the first time since March 5, 2002-March 5, 2003.

They’ll hope for another solid performance from Lowry, who is averaging 19.6 points over his last eight games. However, prior to last month’s meeting with Toronto, Lowry had shot 36.2 percent and averaged 9.7 points in seven games versus the Raptors.

There is the quick update of the day.

The Houston Rockets are winning the close ones with a rugged schedule ahead.

Kyle Lowry scored 26 points, Luis Scola had 15 points and 10 rebounds and the Rockets beat the Toronto Raptors 88-85 on Tuesday night.

“We’ve built on it so much, and our team has come together so well,” Lowry said. “We have the faith in each other to make the plays, make the right plays and right decisions for each other and win games.”

Kevin Martin scored 14 points, though he missed a free throw with 11.7 seconds left that gave the Raptors a chance to tie it. But Linas Kleiza missed a long 3-point try, Martin corralled the rebound and the Rockets won for the 18th time in the last 25 games.

“The last possession was huge,” said rookie Chandler Parsons, who came up with a key offensive rebound that led to Martin’s late free throws. “We all switched, we all communicated, and we made them take a tough shot.”

The Rockets finished a 5-1 homestand and now face another demanding stretch, with games against Denver and the Los Angeles Clippers this weekend before a weeklong road trip.

“We’re not going to make the playoffs just by winning home games,” Scola said. “We need to win on the road, we need to win big games.”

DeMar DeRozan scored 17 points, James Johnson had 16 and Ed Davis tied a career-high with 15 rebounds for the Raptors. Toronto outrebounded Houston 47-37, but went 2 for 17 from 3-point range and committed 17 turnovers.

The Raptors have lost eight of their last 10 games.

“I liked our effort and we competed as a team,” Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. “Basketball plays and basketball decisions have to get better.”

The Rockets have won 25 consecutive games when holding their opponent below 90 points, and they’re 13-0 in those games this year.

Scola scored eight points in the first seven minutes, and Houston took advantage of Toronto’s poor shooting to build an early lead. The Raptors started 2 for 11.

The Rockets, meanwhile, played efficiently at the start, opening 10 for 21 from the field to lead 27-15.

Houston led 45-36 at the break, despite getting out rebounded 27-19. The Raptors hurt themselves will 11 first-half turnovers.

The Raptors continued to control the boards in the third quarter, and trimmed the deficit to three on DeRozan’s dunk with 1:53 left. Goran Dragic beat the clock with a driving one-hander to put the Rockets up 69-64 heading to the fourth.

Lowry swished a 3 with just under five minutes left for an 81-73 Houston lead. The Raptors answered with a quick 6-0 run, capped by Amir Johnson’s layup.

“We got the game under control,” Scola said, “and then we started making a lot of mistakes. They even got back in the game, and we were lucky.”

Toronto trailed only 85-83 when Parsons grabbed an offensive rebound off a Martin miss. Martin got Anthony Carter in the air on a head fake and drew the shooting foul with 11.7 seconds left.

“We believe in ourselves and we were right there at the end, but we couldn’t get it done,” Raptors guard Jose Calderon said. “We have to try and learn to win possessions at the end of the game.”

Martin, an 88.6 per cent free-throw shooter, made the first try, but missed the second, and Houston led only 86-83. The Rockets guarded Toronto’s inbound play well, Kleiza was forced to take a 30-foot 3-pointer from a bad angle, and Martin rebounded.

Notes: The Rockets have been outrebounded in seven consecutive games. … Houston is 8-2 against the Eastern Conference this season. … The home team has won the last nine meetings. … The Rockets honoured members from their teams of the 1980s in a pre-game ceremony, including John Lucas, Robert Reid, Rodney McCray and Ralph Sampson, the first overall pick in the 1983 draft. The 7-foot-4 Sampson was one of 12 finalists for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. “It’s only an accolade that my teammates and this organization can appreciate as well,” Sampson said, “that they have somebody who loved the game, loved the city, loved the fans. And if that happens, we’ll all go in together, so it works out.”

Kyle Lowry scores 26 in Rockets' 88-85 win…

HOUSTON – The Houston Rockets are winning the close ones with a rugged schedule ahead.

Kyle Lowry scored 26 points, Luis Scola had 15 points and 10 rebounds and the Rockets beat the Toronto Raptors 88-85 on Tuesday night.

Toronto Raptors fall to Houston Rockets

Image

HOUSTON—He tried again to explain the inexplicable, to figure out what goes on in the minds of his players when close games are on the line, when one play might make the difference and one good decision might make up for a night of miscues.

And Dwane Casey has no real answer because the Raptors just have a way of making crucial mistakes at the most critical times, one of the most worrisome traits of this season.

“How many games have we had like that this year,” coach Casey wondered after the Raptors dropped an 88-85 decision to the Houston Rockets here on Tuesday night. “Situations where we put ourselves in position and it comes down to one play, one possession, one situation and we misread or don’t come up with the play?”

Too many would be the right answer.

The game, before a paltry crowd of 13,337, was there for the taking, despite an awful night for an out-of-sync Toronto offence.

It was on offence where the Raptors came up short, shooting just 46 per cent from the field and a dismal 2-for-17 from three-point range, while committing 17 turnovers.

“Anytime you hold a team to 38 per cent, 39 per cent, out-rebound them by 10, you would say that you won the basketball game. But you turn around and have 18 turnovers, that’s the ball game,” said Casey, inflating Toronto’s turnovers by one.

The Raptors had hung around and hung around in what was an ugly game from start to finish and refused to quit. They trailed practically all night but carved a 13-point deficit to two on three separate occasions down the stretch and failed every time to make a play.

The final two minutes were like a lowlight film or a lesson in how not to finish a game.

The Raptors lost Houston’s Chandler Parsons on a scrambled play while down two with a couple of minutes remaining and Parsons made a wide-open shot.

“In a scramble situation it doesn’t matter who you have . . . in that situation you find the closest man and we drill that a lot,” said Casey.

Needing one stop to have a legitimate chance to steal the game, they got it down to two with about 33 seconds to go but they left Parsons — there’s that guy again — unguarded and he got the biggest offensive rebound of the game with little or no resistance from a Raptor.

“We get right there, put ourselves in a position to win and invariably we have a brain let-up and give it back to them,” said Casey.

And then, with less than 10 seconds to go and down by three, the Raptors had to settle for a contested Linas Kleiza three-pointer that missed when he was about the third option.

“They switched out on the last play and in that situation you always screen your own man and we didn’t,” said Casey. “Those are the things we have to learn how to do. . . . L.B. (Leandro Barbosa) was the first option in that situation.”

So there it is, again. The story of the Raptors’ season is the series of brain cramps that hit with close games on the line and when Casey hammers home that this is a learning season, he should add that not all lessons are fun.

“We believe in ourselves, we compete; that third quarter we came back, the fourth quarter it was right there,” said Jose Calderon. “Maybe in another season we quit sometimes with these kind of games. This team keeps fighting and we can compete against anybody so it’s disappointing.

“They are a good team but we could have had this one. We need to believe that we could win this game.”

Andrea Bargnani, meanwhile, is with the team on the short road trip that winds up Wednesday in New Orleans but there remains no timetable for his return from a strained left calf that’s sidelined him for the last 15 games.

NBA Standings 2012: Houston Goes Into Second Half…

Read More: Kevin Martin (G – HOU), Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers

The Houston Rockets have played in relative anonymity for the first half of the season with moderate expectations that have been exceeded thus far. At 20-14, the Rockets are tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for 5th in the Western Conference, but lose the tie-break due to the 108-99 loss to the Lakers back in January. The Rockets are in a good position to let their young talent continue to flourish, while trying to make a push towards making a playoff run in May.

One question that has been asked is, can the Rockets make a trade to improve the team? Kevin Martin’s name has come up in rumors, but nothing has come from it as of yet. Its scary to think that this team could have had Pau Gasol on it if things broke a little differently. However, at this point Kevin McHale is sitting pretty and general manager Daryl Morey might have one more move left in him to improve the squad, and that’s all a Rockets fan can ask for.

Here are the western conference standings going into the second half of the season.

Scola, Lowry Lead Rockets Past Sixers

HOUSTON (AP) — Luis Scola had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Kyle Lowry added 13 points and two crucial three-point plays down the stretch, and the Houston Rockets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 93-87 on Wednesday night.

Kevin Martin scored 16 points and Patrick Patterson added 12 off the bench for the Rockets, who’ve won three in a row and snapped a four-game home-court losing streak to Philadelphia.

Nikola Vucevic scored a career-high 18 points and Thaddeus Young had 15 for the 76ers, who will head into the All-Star break on a five-game losing streak. The 76ers lost for only the second time in their past nine meetings with Houston.

Philly was held without a 3-pointer for the first time this season, missing all nine attempts. The Rockets went 5 for 18 from 3-point range, with all but one of the makes coming in the second half.

The lead changed hands five times in the final five minutes before Lowry drove into Vucevic for a layup, drew the foul and made the free throw for an 86-84 lead. Louis Williams made a free throw with 1:38 remaining, but Lowry then converted another three-point play with 59 seconds left to make it 89-85.

Williams slipped on the baseline in front of the Houston bench, the 76ers’ 13th turnover, and the Rockets hit their free throws in the last minute to preserve the victory.

Lowry also had eight rebounds and Chandler Parsons scored 12 points for the Rockets. Williams scored 17 points for the 76ers.

Both teams shot poorly early, and neither had scored 10 points midway through the first quarter. Lowry left four minutes into the game and limped to the locker room with athletics trainer Keith Jones.

Houston found its shooting touch first and took a 19-16 lead. Lowry returned to the bench with Jones in the last minute of the quarter, and was back on the floor for the start of the second.

The bad shooting and sloppy offense continued, with the Rockets leading only 28-27 with less than six minutes left before the break. At that point, Vucevic had 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting, while the rest of the 76ers had 17 points on 7-of-26 shooting.

Philadelphia also had five turnovers in the second quarter to fuel a late Rockets’ spurt. Goran Dragic hit a 3-pointer early in a 13-4 burst and Houston built a 10-point lead. The 76ers answered with a quick 8-2 spurt to trail 45-41 at halftime.

The Rockets picked up the offensive pace in the third quarter, stretching the lead to eight points. The 76ers attacked Houston’s small lineup inside, answering with a 10-0 run that gave them a 56-54 lead.

Houston went cold late in the third quarter, and mustered only 16 points on 7-for-17 shooting. The 76ers scored 14 of their 24 third-quarter points in the paint and led 65-61 heading to the fourth.

Martin swished back-to-back 3-pointers near the nine-minute mark to keep Houston within three. After Thaddeus Young scored inside, Martin hit another 3 and Patterson scored to tie it at 75-all.

Notes: The Rockets have won 24 consecutive games when holding their opponent to less than 90 points. … Lowry missed his first free-throw attempt, after making his previous 25. … The 76ers dropped to 7-2 in the second game of back-to-back sets this season. … Philly coach Doug Collins couldn’t give a timetable for Spencer Hawes’ return from a left Achilles strain. Collins said Hawes will visit a doctor in Los Angeles during the All-Star break and wear a protective boot.

Philadelphia 76ers dealt fifth straight loss by…

HOUSTON — Luis Scola had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Kyle Lowry added 13 points and two crucial three-point plays down the stretch, and the Houston Rockets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 93-87 on Wednesday night.
